You can’t get ’em here dept. (for now!)

Having once worked in sales at a local Suzuki dealership, I naturally have an interest in the little cars. Also, years ago we owned a 2-door Geo Metro, which was nothing more than a Suzuki Swift with different nameplates.
When that version of the Swift was updated, Chevy (which had been selling the rebadged Suzukis as Geos until 1998 when they decided to call them Chevrolets) stopped selling the car. Other countries have been selling the newer Swifts right along, and a new one is due out soon. Rumor has it we may see it again in the U.S. in 2010. As a way of replacing the Metro/Swift, starting with the 2004 model year a rebadged Daewoo Kalos (made in South Korea) went on sale in North America as the Chevy Aveo; in Canada it was also available as the Pontiac Wave and the Suzuki Swift+ (and is now available in the U.S. as the Pontiac G3).
The current Swift does very well in the “hot hatch” category where it’s available, and unless gas drops down to below two bucks a gallon (don’t hold your breath) the new Swift should also do well here when it finally appears.
