2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid

A team of professional drivers is gearing up for a 43-hour continuous drive in a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Their goal: 1,000 miles on a single tank of gas! They’ll need to avarage 57 miles per gallon to make their goal. The Fusion Hybrid though, has an EPA rating of 41 mpg and a 17.5 gallon gas tank. Ford’s own web page touts “700 miles on a tank of gas.”

So 1,000 miles on that same tank of gas will be quite a feat. Praying for strong tailwinds? Following close (real close) behind tractor-trailors? Maybe shutting off the engine and doing a little Fred Flintstoning? Should be interesting to see how they make out. Ford claims their drivers will be using the Eco-Driving tips available to all on their web page. If this is all it takes to go a grand on a tank of gas, I expect to see OPEC ministers doing swan dives from the penthouse at the conclusion of Ford’s test.
