Dispatch: Conversation with a Boy Wonder
Artvoice Top 40 correspondent Brad Deck talks with American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, who comes to town tonight:
Mere moments after just barely losing the American Idol crown last summer, musician David Archuleta saw his wildest dream become reality nonetheless.
“I was in my dressing room after the show ended, and they came in and told me how they were excited to work with me, and just like that I had to get started,” Archuleta told Artvoice. “I was thinking that I’d be sitting on it for a while, looking for what opportunities would come around, and who would be the right people to work with. But it was like, ‘Whoa.’”
And just like “Whoa,” David Archuleta has sung his way into the hearts of millions of teenage girls who have helped to make his debut album a certified gold success, and who are sure to turn out in droves to Club Infinity when Archuleta’s first solo tour stops there tonight.
Archuleta’s career could have easily gone the way of many American Idol runners-up since the reality competition juggernaut debuted in 2002—the career legitimacies of Justin Guarini and Blake Lewis never caught on, while even one-time middle-aged mom magnet Clay Aiken has turned second-rate Broadway has-been—but it would appear that by way of good old-fashioned talent, Archuleta the musician is here to stay.
Said staying-power has been undeniably established by both the success and critical reception of Archuleta’s debut effort (the New York Times said he “has a lovely, foggy R&B voice out of scale with his small body”) and his debut single, “Crush,” has sold more copies than any other Idol contestant’s debut single to date. While such a record might inflate the ego of a less-grounded individual, the 18-year-old still seems generally confused as to why he’s received the stardom that accompanies teen idolhood.
“A year ago, I didn’t think I would ever be the kind of person to have any fans, let alone people who dedicate websites to me. It’s unbelievable, but that’s something that happened with ‘American Idol.’ I definitely won’t be the last person [thrust into the spotlight], but that doesn’t make it any less surreal.” When asked about the perils of Googling his name, Archuleta shyly replied, “It’s weird.”
What’s weirder about the career path of a post-reality television star is that David Archuleta’s first time out of the gate and onto a national tour circuit, meant playing before crowds in the largest arenas in the country. This time, however, he’ll be visiting smaller venues in the cities that embraced him so fondly while touring with the “Idol” cast.
“The smaller venues is really how I pictured it would be. I wasn’t really expecting to be playing arenas my first time out. But I’m looking forward to it. It’s not as crazy,” he said, looking forward to venues that are “more focused on the music.” That’s not to say that his arena gigs don’t hold fond memories: Archuleta was one of the headliners at the Kiss 98.5 Kiss-mas Bash in December, an event that resonated strongly with the singer.
“I did a jingle ball, or jingle bash or whatever in Buffalo, and that was way fun. That was one of my favorites, in terms of the holiday shows. The crowd was so big, and so energetic.” While he certainly cannot be expected to remember the name of every Christmas compilation show he played last year—there were many, common for new artists looking to gain individual exposure—it’s no surprise that a stop at the house of some of the most expressive sports fans in the country would hold a special place in his heart.
But, like any fledgling musical artist fresh off the heels of one of the year’s biggest traveling shows, it’s back to the drawing board for Archuleta. While he eagerly anticipates returning to the studio to work on some new material, he is focusing now on the hectic schedule he keeps at present, even without the benefit of studio time. He’s even had to put high school on hold, as well as any semblance of an average teenager’s social life along with it.
“High school for me is online right now, and I’ve already missed my chance at prom. I got to go to a school dance last month, but even that was scheduled by my management. There’s no personal time with me.”
With time, however, perhaps Archuleta, like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood before him, will break free of the seemingly tyrannical rule of the American Idol machine and establish himself as an honest-to-goodness musician. Until then, it’s all about connecting with his fans on the road (as well as on the screen: he’s set to make an upcoming guest appearance on Hannah Montana, the ultimate in tween exposure.) Maybe the next time he’s in Buffalo, he will once again grace the stage of the HSBC Arena, but Archuleta’s not holding his breath.
“I’m just looking forward to spending time with my fans,” he said. “I don’t care how big the stage is.”
For someone who finds the trappings of international fame so “weird,” David Archuleta seems to look (and sound) pretty natural in the spotlight.
David Archuleta will be joined by Leslie Roy at Club infinity at 7 pm on March 3.

Thanks for the lovely article, it was spot on. In addition to millions of teen girls’ hearts, David’s also found his way into the hearts of men and women of all ages. Probably due to his raw talent and genuine warmth. This prodigy will be around for a long, long time.

Thank you for a well-researched, well-written article. David’s first headlining tour is looking to be a success, and I have the distinct impression that no one could be more deserving.

He is loved by all ages from 7 to 99. His fans are killing him because they are waiting in lines too early in this cold weather. David worried about them and sent his people to bring them to inside of the building one day. On another day, fans were waiting from morning and David went out to see them at noon. Today, they pleaded not to form a line before 3 pm. Fans are not helping David. He needs to take a rest and to fully focus on performances every night. BTW, he is the sweetest guy ever.

“”"Clay Aiken has turned second-rate Broadway has-been—but it would appear that by way of good old-fashioned talent, Archuleta the musician is here to stay.”"”
I love Archie and this article. I don’t understand the “sedond rate Broadway has been comment.” Clay, as I understand it, has done one show on Broadway and did a good job. How does one become a “second rate has been” after only one show? Is this the authors opinion? I love the recording, movie, and Broadway successes for these idol kids. So much talent!!!!
Comment by Hillary — March 3, 2009 @ 12:25 pm
Nice article, David is a sweetie. Only part I disagree with is your nasty dig at Clay Aiken. I love both performers, and Aiken is definitely NOT a “has been,” unless you also consider all the other supremely talented singers and actors starring on Broadway “has beens.” Now that Aiken is finally free of the RCA/Idol shackles we’ll see what happens. Hopefully they won’t do to David what they did to Clay.
Comment by debra — March 3, 2009 @ 12:29 pm
I don’t understand why the “dig” at Clay. This is positive Archie/Idol article. The Clay hater sites are loving this article and pasting it in their blogs. I think the Clay remark is a blatant unnecessary swipe that hurts the credibility of the article. I am a journalist so I’m touchy about this kind of stuff.

David has the most unique voice, it’s smooth, clear and powerful. He’s the sweetest and most sincere young man I’ve ever met. This talented teen will be around to entertain and motivate us for a long time. Thank you for the article.

Good god man! David is a granny magnet. Read your comments, those aren’t teens. His career is unproven yet. His total album sales are about the same as Clay’s very first week on his debut album. Get your facts straight and grow the hell up.
Comment by Avery — March 3, 2009 @ 1:49 pm
You are sadly mistaken Avery! Have you even seen the pictures of the fans at his concerts? He has teens, tweens, young adults, adults and mature adults in his large and ever expanding fanbase. It is this kind of misinformation coming from people like you that is laughable, and shows once again that if ignorance is bliss, people like you must be the happiest folks on the planet. Archuleta pulls them in from all spectrums in the age, race and gender demographic, and will continue to do so for a long time – after folks like you have been long forgotten! Instead of growing up, might I suggest you grow a brain!
Comment by BarefootServant — March 3, 2009 @ 1:55 pm
No need to disparage the David A fans for this article – we hold no ill will toward Clay or his fans, but we love our David, and will have his back always…. he is settling into his stardom very nicely, doesn’t have the airs or sense of entitlement one would expect from someone of his talent, and doesn’t speak ill of any of his contemporaries in the current music scene, or previous contestants on Idol. Show him the respect he has deserved, and the respect will be freely returned. Thank you.
Comment by Archangel — March 3, 2009 @ 2:00 pm
I think David has a great voice. And given time, he’ll grow into a fine artist and musician. But I, too, don’t understand the need to denigrate Clay Aiken. When Little Archie sells 6 million CDs, is a hit on Broadway and tours 5-6 times…..then we’ll see what star power he still has. But I will grant you this – mentioning Clay Aiken sure got you some Google hits! Why is it always necessary to tear one performer down to make another one look good? Both men are talented in their own right and not competitive with each other.
Comment by sue — March 3, 2009 @ 2:06 pm
Sure, David has a nice voice. But let’s see if five years down the road he has become the humanitarian and philanthropist that Clay Aiken, the “has-been” has become. Let’s see if David starts a foundation that helps children all over the United States. That, truly, is the “Measure of a Man.” I doubt David will measure up.
Comment by Jerry — March 3, 2009 @ 2:07 pm
Archuleta is proving to be a bona fide talent, and a fast rising star in pop music. He is doing it the old fashioned way – paying his dues by touring in these small to medium size venues, showing care and consideration for his fans, and turning in one great performance after another.
He is giving his fans their money’s worth on this tour, and then some. His talent goes with saying, his professionalism and joy in just singing is a wonder to behold – no wonder he has attracted and held the attention of fans from all ages. A talent like his cannot be denied, or held down by rude and backhanded comments from those people to caught up in trying to be “too cool for school”…
Time is on David’s side, and time will only serve to grow and mature him into an artist of deeper substance… and we who love him are prepared to be right there with him along every step of his journey – BRAVO DAVID!

David is already on the way to being a great humanitarian, and sponsor of charities. He was just announced as the new face of DoSomething.org’s latest campaign that helps teens nationwide take action for disaster relief, he recorded a special song and is participating in the Build-A-Bear campaign for the Love. Hugs. Peace.(TM) Movement to Harness the Power of Youth, Encourage Charitable Giving, and Celebrate Volunteerism – check out this link:
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/marketwire/0473951.htm
Goggle him and read up on his charitable contributions and activities, they are numerous… he is a very caring and socially conscious young man, and there need be no further comparisons made between him and any other celebrities regarding this matter. These activities speak more and reveals the persons character, more than trying to determine their “measure as a man”.
Comment by DAFAN — March 3, 2009 @ 2:24 pm
Jerry, David was born to be a humanitarian, he has done so much for people already than you will every know. It is obvious that you don’t know our David the man himself, he has already has, he is spokesperson for Do Something.Org google it and you will find more info. He recently promoted Jeans for teens to help children who don’t have the income to purchase jeans. His fav. charities include Make a Wish foundation,MS,risingstaroutreach.org helping to fund dental equipment that is badly needed to treat the leprosy patients of India, and the list will go on. His fans have supported him when he was with su2c and have a team called Crush Kids’ Cancer – David Archuleta’s Angels that have raised $47.561. To think that David has only just begun…

Thank you Artvoice, and Brad Deck for this positive true article/ interview with David! After seeing David perform in both Lancaster and Allentown this past weekend, is is more apparent than ever that “David Archuleta” is truely “here to stay” in the music world! He is handling all of the responsibility and pressures of a rising star with maturity and grace….more than any other 18 year old I’ve seen. For those of us who recognized his talent and loved him as a person from his first AI audition, I can only say….”We knew long ago, that he’d be “bigger” than any runner-up, possibly even winner, in AI’s history!
Comment by Joanie MN — March 3, 2009 @ 2:26 pm
Re: Sue’s comments —> You denigrate and attempt to diminish David by referring to him as Little Archie.. he is 18 years old, a respected artist by his peers, and his name is David. He is deserving of that respect, as much as you want Clay to be taken seriously, and respected. It must be given if it is to be returned. We have taken as much or even more stick from the media as Clay, but we aren’t here to argue of get into a war of words with anyone – take up any concerns you may have with the author by contacting him directly – but leave of the attempts to disparage David…. Please.

before you speak do some research. David is involved in some many foundations, I can’t list them all. Don’t know where he finds the time but he does. Ask the CEOs of these foundations. BABs (even took time to record a song for them and selling like pancakes and all proceeds go to this foundation), Do Something.org, Save the Children, Make A Wish Foundation, Doctors for Leporsy, and the list goes on and on. Became an Eagle scout, help plants trees and local parks in the middle of his tour! And he’s only 18!! You’re angry because this author put down your artist but you are guilty of the same thing. I say good for both of them and the more success these artists have, the more they can help their fellow man. So don’t bash another artist to make a point.
Comment by Becca — March 3, 2009 @ 2:31 pm
David Archuleta is a phenomenal talent who does indeed have fans of all ages both nationally and internationally. Along with this preternatural talent comes his ability to remain unassuming and humble,a difficult task for a teenager in an industry so full of glitz and glamour. He adores singing and doesn’t put the premium value on fame and fortune and it’s refreshing to witness. He is a wonderful role model for many young people today and as he matures we will hear even more great music from this sweet young man. I’m not sure why there had to be a stab at Clay. He is successful in his own right and has been for a few years. I know that David would not like reading something like that.

More from Maxine Clark, and David’s BAB involvement – ”
“Remember I was inspired by the Coca Cola song. I few years ago I mentioned to my friend Tena Clark, a song writer and producer, how powerful music has been for me and how much music has inspired me. She asked a few questions and a few months later she came to me with a song inspired by our conversation, children and teddy bears—“Let’s Talk About Love”. I loved it the minute I heard it. In fact, I couldn’t stop humming the tune. I knew this could be a winner. One of those songs that will move people to do good things. To dream, to hope and to help others. We just needed the right singers to help us get the message across and to inspire our kids to do even more good stuff. We set out on a search.
We asked our Guests, our friends, our associates. Believe it or not one day I was in NYC visiting the Today Show and this incredibly friendly and talented singer was there – David Archuleta. I knew he was famous but he was so nice and had such a powerful voice. He even had his picture taken with me. Our team agreed he would be PAWFECT! Just the person to launch the song and in time for Valentine’s Day too. While it isn’t a love song, it is a song about love—love between friends and people who value the best in others. Guess what? He said YES!!!

I think the author has reason why Clay is not Clay of the old times any more. There have been articles about him being dropped by his major label. David Foster said he would help Clay by any means since he is family. His decision to come out is OK, but when he was sticking up his middle finger with his lover in this close-up picture made me disappointed, and I am done with him. Clay is changed and so is his career.

Hopefully all David fans will read this and know that Clay fans have no desire to get into any fan wars. We’ve had six years of hateful battles with some other fans and they still will not leave Clay alone–even to this day they have a couple of sites where they do nothing but bash Clay 24/7. Our hope is that David never has to go through this kind of hatefulness. The problem is, posts like the nasty one above are often made by trolls from these hateful sites just to stir up trouble. Please learn to ignore them, the vast majority of Clay fans recognize what a great singer and guy David is and even rooted for him to win. I know this because I was in those AI threads on the Clay mbs. No Clay fan would ever wish onto David what has been done to Clay over the past six years–either by the label or other fans.

I believe calling someone a second-hand, washed up performer is alot stronger than calling someone by a nickname. I have nothing against David. I think he has a beautiful voice. Time will tell whether or not he lasts in the industry. I do not, however, think he walks on water!!! I wish him good luck in his career and I’m sure he’s a good role model for pre-teens and teens! However, when he starts a foundation that allows hundreds of children with disabilities to go to a summer camp and do things that children with non-disabilities can do, when he provides funds for reading programs and promotes education, when he becomes a UNICEF ambassador and travels to third-world countries to raise money for pure drinking water and school supplies, etc. than I will consider him a humanitarian as well. Hopefully he’ll never have PRIVATE pictures leaked to the media or have cretins like Perez Hilton and others riding him mercilessly. In the meantime, as I said before, I wish him good luck with his career. And it still is NOT necessary to tear one singer down to build another one up.

Geoff – nice interview with David. It appears that he is still the same sweet guy we all saw last year on Idol – fame doesn’t seem to have gone to his head. He seems to be very appreciative of the opportunity to do what he loves….make music. However, it’s too bad that so many “writers” feel the need to diss someone else these days just to get “hits” to their articles. This piece certainly would have stood on it’s own very well with the focus being totally on David and his abundant talent – which is where it belonged. Hopefully you will consider this the next time you decide to do an interview with someone as worthy as David.
Comment by Zach — March 3, 2009 @ 3:29 pm
It happens with David too RS – and we have learned to pick our battles very carefully…. not everyone will love or like the music he sings, and we accept that. Cannot for the life of me understand though how someone so unassuming and humble could compel some folks to spew the type of hateful comments they do.. that’s alright as well, because success is the greatest revenge, and all the negativity does is serve to make us stronger, more focused and more committed as a fanbase to support his efforts, in all he does.
We are content to let his talent speak for itself, but make no mistake – David is nobody’s fool or a pushover, and his fans will pick those times when an appropriate, rational and factual response to outright lies and misinformation is warranted. Good luck to Clay, and all his fans, and here’s hoping for more successes ahead for both!
Comment by David A Is Our Man — March 3, 2009 @ 3:36 pm
Point Taken Sue – and we have no illusions about David’s ability to walk on water… LOLOL… We are just passionately committed to him, because of his talent, and all the crap he endured from TPTB on Idol, and from a media seemingly hell bent on ridiculing anyone who doesn’t fit their concept of “cool”…
David shrugs this off, and keeps on keeping on, in spite of the media’s best efforts to stick the knife in at every turn… What you see is what you get with him – this shy, sometimes goofy and awkward young man making his way in the world and the music business… this is why we love and care for him so – he doesn’t claim to be something he’s not, and is self aware enough to poke a little fun at himself at times.
No need to get into a spitting match regarding whose charitable endeavours are greater – Hooray for Clay in his efforts, and I’m sure given time, David may find it in his time and heart to contribute something equally great.. they both are to be commended for these efforts. Peace and good wishes to you and all the Clay fans!

It seems that anytime a talented performer steps into the arena there are going to be people trying to tear him down. I’m sorry to see that there’s bashing going on here, because I know David would be very uncomfortable with it. He has a good heart and always tries to keep a positive attitude. We would do well to follow his example.

David has an amazing voice and I am sure he will continue to do well as his career progresses. He is also a very caring and sensible young man. I heard an earlier interview done with him and the reporter asked him a question about something that had been printed about Clay Aiken. He said he thought it was terrible that the media treated Clay so badly. He couldn’t believe that people could be so nasty and said it was probably better to not pay any attentiion to these reporters.
For that reason I don’t think David would be very impressed with the slight against Clay in this article. It diminishes all the good said about David and he doesn’t deserve that. Very poor journalism ….David’s name was the only name that should have been mentioned in an article about David….that would have made this a great article…instead it just an article about David that slights another talent…..that’s sad. Guess I should have listened to what David said in the earlier interview and skipped this piece.

What a nice article, thank you very much. My comment also refers to the one you make calling his fanbase teenage girls. I am 68 years old and was a “teenage fan” of Paul Anka and Frankie Avalon. But the passion I have for this 18 y/o guy is different. It is not a crush, it’s the love I feel for his angelical voice, as well as his giving attitude and never asking for anything in return. I saw a photo in the past several days which showed hundreds of people standing in line in the afternoon for his show that night. It was amazing how many of that crowd WERE NOT teenagers. The majority appeared to be middle-age to older fans. I have no doubt that we will be here supporting David for many many years. Thank you again for the positive article.

Guess you really wanted to hear from the ‘crazy’ Clay Aiken fans-uh?? Well here goes. What makes you say Clay is a ’second-rate Broadway has-been’??? Clay garnered incredible reviews for his roles (3 different characters and he used 3 different British accents to perfection) in his first, and only, so far, Broadway musical. He was fantastic and the director, the great Mike Nichols thought he was fantastic, too. That’s why he was brought back for a 2nd run. There are many more Broadway performances in this incredible talent. The majority of actors and singers would give their eye-teeth to be on Broadway; and many have been directly quoted as saying so. Just because Simon was very lame in making the comment that Broadway was not a ‘good thing’; doesn’t make him know what he is talking about. Great credibility comes from performing, especially great, on Broadway; whether in a musical, comedy and/or dramas. Clay has more talent in his pinky than most performers have in their whole body. Any wonder why he garnered “EIGHTY PERCENT of the vote every week he was on” during AI2?? Two producers of AI admitted to those facts. Ruben didn’t ‘win’ AI2, Clay did. There was never a competition between Clay and anyone else on that show. Why do you think they added an extra two phone lines and two more hours of voting for the finalists the very next year???? They didn’t want the complete fiasco that Clay’s popularity caused to happen again with anyone else who would have gained the same fandom. But I doubt that ever happened, or ever will. IDOL FOUND, GAME OVER.

Every year or two there is a contestant on Idol that touches the hearts of it’s viewers. It gets a little old that the press has to pit these singers and their respective fans against one another. I like David and I like Clay. David is young with a bright future. Clay has become a seasoned performer, with a lot of guts to put up with the grap has had to deal with, and his future his bright too.
I find it disrespective by any journalist to take a stab at either one. Report the facts and keep personal opinions to yourself. The media has done more harm than good to a lot of these contestants, let them perform and the audience enjoy.
Enough said.

Sorry, edit on last post “crap he has had to deal with” and “disrespectful” get a little angry when I read this stuff and forget my typing skills!

Could you please remove the links to that Adam Lambert blog? I went there as I like Adam as well as David and saw a post on a blog by the same man stating that David is gay. He is not gay, he’s just a kid. Not that there’s anything wrong with being gay (I love Adam too remember) but this is so not true. Please take the links out!

Thanks for a great article about David! (I do wish you’d left Clay alone as he’s doing fine and isn’t the subject of discussion anyway.)
David is a once in a generation talent and will be incredibly successful imho. He is not just a teen or granny magnet, he draws people of ALL ages. That’s what will ultimately make him an icon in the business–his appeal to people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, both sexes, you name it. His voice is out of this world–exquisite, soaring and passionate, and he has a rare musicality that enables him to beautifully rearrange songs on the fly. Plus, he is as endearing and gorgeous a human being as God ever made. He inspires people, gives them hope, lifts spirits just by being his adorkable self.
His personal appeal which is sooo strong for legions of fans coupled with the stellar voice and musicality are a truly lethal combination. I’ve never been a fan of anyone EVER but have travelled 7,200+ miles to see David sing three times. I have another three concerts and 2,600 miles lined up and I cannot wait.
As far as being a humanitarian, David is off to a great start. If it’s a good charity, you can pretty much count him in. Here are a few of his efforts in approximately the last six months. His team at Stand Up to Cancer (908 of us) had the highest grossing charity team (there are over 2,000) and raised $47,561. He donated a shirt, bracelet and two CDs to Bonnie Hunt for her charity and garnered $6,550 for cancer research. His bowl at Clothes Off Our Back (battling children’s hunger in the USA) raised $700 (highest of all celebrities other than George Clooney), his Christmas ornaments there raised $425, his hardhat for Habitat for Humanity is currently at $300. He’s spokesman for the online site Celebrities Gone Good, for DoSomething.org and Teens for Jeans. He recorded a song gratis for Build a Bear to assist them in raising $50,000 for Save the Children. You get the drift, I assume. And, he’s just eighteen years and two months old. Not bad for a teenager. Bully for Clay AND David.
I am gobsmacked by his talent and his heart. I will be a HUGE fan of David’s forever and a day. No doubt.

Thank you to all of you who understood what I was trying to say. It is incredibly sad to me that the Fourth Estate has stooped to such low levels that they have to use sensationalism and gimmicks to get attention. David DID deserve to have this piece be about him, and him alone! Clay deserves not to be mentioned every time someone talks about an AI runner-up or a singer who is gay or any of the other disgusting things that are said about him. And both young men deserve privacy in their private lives. We pay to hear them sing and see them on stage. Anything else in their lives is none of our business!
And I also have to thank all of you who kept these comments on track and were respectful.
I sincerely hope David can remain unjaded and unsullied by TPTB – whether they be American Idol judges or second-rate shoddy journalism. Both have a God-given talent to thrill us with their voices. Both seem to be very nice young men who care about those less fortunate. The rest is all noise!!!

Interesting reading these comments. It would appear the predictions have been proven correct. i.e the midddle-aged, Christian right have moved from Clay to Archie.
I have this to say :Run David…..Run for your Life”
When David comes out all hell will break loose – all over again. Oh well!

i wish david well.. he seemed like a good person with a good head on his shoulder and talented but let’s see where he would be in 5 years.
this article ran out of credibility when the author chooses to put down another singer for no reason..
let David have his day in the sun… Clay Aiken is a success and recently completed 2 stints in a Tony award winning shows to rave reviews,,
how does he suddenly become a second rate actor has been?
Comment by pat free — March 4, 2009 @ 1:10 am
Let’s see where David Archuleta is in 5 years, he isn’t even one year off the show. Clay Aiken has had 7 successful tours, 2 stints on broadway. What will David have accomplished in that same number of years.
Comment by Emma — March 4, 2009 @ 1:21 am
I told myself to just not comment and move on but I just have to ask… What is the point of this debate? Really. It is impossible to compare the philanthropic, as well as career accomplishments of a nearly 30 year old with those of an eighteen year old. It’s also borderline insane to cast doubt as to if he will ‘measure up’ to anyone Else’s accomplishments, and pretty dang vicious to hope for anything than the absolute best for David. I am a fan of Clay as well as David, and with regards to the stereotype proposed, as to the age/gender makeup of David’s fans, I am a 28 year old guy, so the teen/granny myth just ain’t gonna cut it. They are both talented, both generous, and both genuinely nice people,(I can say that; I have met them both), and deserve at the very LEAST everyone’s respect for not just surviving in the music industry, but thriving!

Am I sensing an undercurrent of jealousy and hypersensitivity from the Clay fans at Archuleta? This talk of where Archuleta may or may not be in 5 years, comparing charitable involvement reeks of silliness and desperation. A desperation emanating from a desire to find something positive and shiny in which to hold onto as one star begins to pale against the white hot light of a rising one….. Does this undercurrent beget feelings of bitterness and defensiveness because Archuleta possesses the mainstream appeal and connection to a much wider demographic in the pop music field that Aiken never achieved?
The future is going to unfold as it will… Each of these young men has their own unique destiny, and outside of placing second on AI, they have nothing much in common. Each will rise or fall on their own merits, and the choices they make in their careers. Archuleta’s journey is just beginning, and holds much promise and potential for great success. Aspersions cast on the makeup of his supporters to his private life are nothing more than red herrings, akin to little gnats to be swatted aside as the full impact of his talent continues to come more into focus.
Archuleta’s fans see beyond all this sound and fury that ultimately signifies nothing regarding his fanbase, sexuality, etc. Such old and tired red herrings trotted out by small minds who have the audacity to accuse others of having them… the raw talent and promise embodied in this 18 year old young man overshadows such trivial matters.. his music brings joy and listening pleasure to millions, and what more could any of us ask for in this jaded and cynical world?
Comment by SoundNFury — March 4, 2009 @ 7:27 am
I am proud to call myself a big fan of David Archuleta. His music touches me and makes me feel happy and uplifted. I don’t feel the need to explain my support for him any more than that.

Why does anyone try to put another performer down? Tell the actors on broadway that they are second-rate. Have you any idea how much work is involved to be in a broadway production? If I’m not mistaken Clay’s caracture is now in Sardi’s…I don’t see Tom Cruise’s wife there or even Fanacia who won AI. In five years are you going to be mocking David?
Comment by pepper — March 4, 2009 @ 10:40 am
Well gee …Staring in Spamalot on Broadway is considered second rate ?? You had better get a fact checker! Clay is also anything but a has been. Let’s just see in 5 years if David A. has produced & starred in his own Christmas special, written a book , toured on his own 9 times , been on Broadway , and had his own philenthropic foundation plus be UNICEF AMBASSADOR !
Yes David is mega talented , but to achieve what Clay Aiken has is truly phenominal and not at all a put-down!
Comment by YWT2004 — March 4, 2009 @ 11:20 am
why would Clay Aiken fan be jalous of David Archuleta ? he is only at the beginning of his career..people only have trouble with the putdown about Clay which he certainly did not deserve.
he have sold millions of Cds, toured successfully 8 times, got a best seller book, and successfully completed 2 stint with spamelot an award winning broadway show.. his name was on the marquis, plastered all around new york in bus and everywhere.. i would not call it a has been second rate broadway actor..are all the stars such as Julia Robert, Daniel Radcliffe that are appearing on broadway second class actors too?

“Am I sensing an undercurrent of jealousy and hypersensitivity from the Clay fans at Archuleta?”
Jealousy, not at all, Clay’s success speaks for itself. Hypersensitivity–yes. I would think that a fan base that is having the same crap thrown at someone they care about would have some sensitivity to those who have been through the same and even more so for six years now.
I followed this link because I got a Clay Aiken alert. I’m not going to disparage David because I haven’t watched AI for years and know nothing about him. But I do know about Clay Aiken as I’ve followed him for six years now and he doesn’t deserve the slams anymore than David does apparently. If David is as nice a guy as everyone says, I can only wish success for him because the good guys are small in number.
Comment by laura — March 4, 2009 @ 3:34 pm
Thanks for the review! I just want to help dispel the idea that David’s fans are all teens. David has a ton of older fans including me. He also has a lot of fans in the music business, from people he has worked with to other singers like Jennifer Lopez (who calls him her other man), Natasha Bedingfield, Sara Bareilles, Gavin DeGraw and more, plus some older stars like Yoko Ono, Tony Orlando and Paul Anka who said David would be his choice to play young Paul Anka in his biographical play. Re the charitable endeavor comparison in the comments – David Archuleta has been in the spotlight for a much shorter time than Clay Aiken. It is not fair to compare their charitable works so far.
Comment by Violet — March 4, 2009 @ 5:41 pm
I have no clue why these Claymates take against David, he is only 18, I think this writer is judging Clay for the lack of sales of his last album, I think he has sold around 150K and the fact that he was dropped from his record label, but I believe he will and continue have a career in Broadway. On the other hand, David has reached a wider crowd from kids to granparents, males and females, and will continue grow each day. I wish them both big success in their future.

——————–
Nope, no jealousy or hypersensitivity, but I find it laughable that the writer says “…but it would appear that by way of good old-fashioned talent, Archuleta the musician is here to stay.” when David hasn’t even been in the business for a year, thus the comments about let’s see where David is in five years as that will be a true test of whether or not he is here to stay.
Nothing against David or his fans, but just because David is successful doesn’t create the need to put down other artists.
Comment by Emma — March 4, 2009 @ 11:43 pm
Just a note to David’s fans…..stay strong in your support for this young man and his talent. If he has to endure the same type of crap that Clay and his fans have put up with for the past 6 years, David will need your love & support.
It is such a shame that the media feel the need to say anthing they want about anyone while they hide behind their keyboards. It is despicable at best. There must be some unwritten code somewhere that in order to be successful in the media business you have to join in on the “who can write the most disgusting, ridiculous, inappropriate, unkind, IRRESPONSIBLE statement about a celebrity on any given day” club.
Just because these individuals (David & Clay) are “celebrities” do they deserve less respect than the media-types would expect to be shown to themselves and their families? Absolutely not.
Comment by Zach — March 5, 2009 @ 2:01 pm
David Archuleta has international appeal. He has more fan web sites and fan clubs internationally than any othe artists living or dead. He has even more than Cook’s. David is a WORLD IDOL, he is not confined to USA alone, like Clay.

Watch this video of Thursday night’s performance of Zero Gravity from Columbus, OH. I’m a fan, but I was not prepared for this. Savor it, because you’re witnessing the moment David lays claim to bona fide pop superstardom. The stage presence, the moves, the energy, the exuberance, the stellar vocals and vocal control throughout this whole performance is mesmerizing…. He has “it”, and no one after watching this performance should ever be in doubt of his authenticity as an artist of the first water. He’s made American Idol, and all those detractors who labeled him bland and boring and just a ballad singer look like absolute fools with this performance.
